Hail Satan?

Hail Satan? is a 2019 documentary directed by Penny Lane that offers a surprising and often humorous look at The Satanic Temple, a contemporary religious and political organization. The film challenges common misconceptions about Satanism, presenting it as a serious and unconventional movement aimed at promoting social justice, secularism, and the separation of church and state.

The documentary follows Lucien Greaves, the charismatic co-founder of The Satanic Temple, as he leads campaigns that use the imagery and symbolism of Satanism to highlight what they view as governmental overreach by religious groups, particularly Christian organizations. One of the main focal points of the film is The Satanic Temple’s attempt to erect a statue of Baphomet in response to the installation of a Ten Commandments monument at the Oklahoma State Capitol. This serves as a way to critique the preferential treatment of Christianity in the public sphere.

One of the film’s strengths is how it balances humour and sincerity. While some of The Satanic Temple’s stunts might seem like pranks or satire at first, Hail Satan? It makes it clear that the group is earnest in its advocacy for religious freedom and the importance of pluralism.

The documentary also touches on the idea that The Satanic Temple doesn’t worship Satan in a literal sense, but rather uses Satan as a symbol of rebellion against arbitrary authority and oppression.

The film is thought-provoking and raises important questions about the intersection of religion and politics, and the role of activism in challenging the status quo. By focusing on The Satanic Temple's grassroots efforts and its growing membership, Hail Satan? Portrays it as a progressive organization that provides a voice to those who feel marginalized by mainstream religion.

The film masterfully its ability to subvert expectations and present Satanism in a new light, while also being entertaining and insightful. However, some may critique it for not diving deeply enough into the complexities of the Satanic movement or for overly idealizing The Satanic Temple’s mission.

Overall, Hail Satan? is an engaging and provocative documentary that uses wit, irony, and a nontraditional approach to shed light on contemporary political and religious issues.
