Mind Body Spirit

This is a 2023 directorial debut of American filmmakers Alex Henes and Matthew Merenda.

The movie introduces us to Anya, an aspiring yoga influencer who, despite her efforts, lacks the physical and charismatic presence required to succeed as a web star. We witness her grappling with insecurities and awkwardness as she attempts to create video tutorials that come off more as parodies inviting public mockery.

Aware of her limitations, we accompany her through her struggles and psychological breakdowns, witnessing her discovery of a hidden passage in the house. This passage leads her to a room filled with candles, mysterious flasks, and a peculiar book hinting at a ritual for inner spirituality. However, what initially seems benign soon plunges her into a nightmarish realm of ghosts and eerie beings.

The film's uniqueness isn't solely in its narrative, but rather in its portrayal of today's world, heavily influenced by social media and the pursuit of fame. It delves into the desire of creators to reveal themselves on camera, tirelessly crafting and seeking an idealized self-image.

Filmed in a Found Footage style, the movie aims to embrace the screenlife genre, a modern evolution blending elements of Mockumentary and Found Footage. Set entirely within Anya's inherited house from her enigmatic grandmother, the story delves into the hidden secrets of spiritual cults, plunging our protagonist into a harrowing journey of paranoia and madness.

The film isn't groundbreaking, yet it effectively portrays a journey of self-discovery, blending themes of spirituality, witchcraft, and the quest for self-worth to illuminate the desire to break free from insignificance and shine in our own light.

While not flawless, this debut film excellently delves into a topic that resonates with everyone, navigating the psychological and real-life terrors of anonymity. It skillfully employs off-screen tension and avoids predictable jump scares, resulting in an engaging experience.
