NIFFF - Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival

The Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival is a hidden gem for horror enthusiasts in Switzerland and beyond. Held in the capital of the canton of Neuchâtel, it takes place during the first few days of July.

The NIFFF constructs its programming around three themes: Fantastic Cinema, Asian Cinema and Digital Images.

Now in its 23rd year and set on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, the event presents an eclectic mix of national and international films, including short films and movies, for an entire week of pure terror. The city transforms with shop windows dedicated to the kermesse, adorned with skulls and knives, playing on the pun "NIFFF-Knife."

This was an unmissable opportunity to experience the Swiss and European premieres of some highly intriguing genre films. This year's lineup featured titles such as "In a Violent Nature," "Longlegs," "Cuckoo," "MaXXXine," "She Loved the Blossom More," "Oddity," and "Handling the Undead" – which won the H.R. Giger "Narcisse" award for best film. Notable guests included Asia Argento, Damian McCarthy, Emma Benestan, Thea Hvistendahl, and Yannis Veslemes.

The Festival spans multiple locations across the city, including Rex and Arcades cinemas, at the Théâtre du Passage equipped with a Maxi Screen, and on Pl. des Halles, which is transformed into a stunning open-air cinema at night, surrounded by beautiful, evocative buildings that enhance the magical atmosphere.

In addition to the screenings, there are performances by artists scattered around the streets of the town, interactive exhibitions set up inside 'La Villa', as well as a space dedicated to themed and dynamic board games representing the theme itself at the Bar de la Villa de la Petite Rochette.

If you're in the area during that time of year, I highly recommend visiting. Watch a few films and immerse yourself in the unique, goliardic, and haunting atmosphere and scenery that only Switzerland can offer.
