Oddity

Since its announcement, this film has captivated me despite the fact it has largely flown under the radar of the general audience. My interest grew immensely, and I was thrilled to attend its Swiss premiere at the NIFFFestival. There, I had the pleasure of hearing insights directly from the director in attendance.

As a horror enthusiast, I enjoy works that leave you breathless and maintain high tension through subtle and sophisticated means, avoiding banal jump-scares or gratuitous ghostly figures to scare general viewers.

However, as one becomes more familiar with this genre, there is a risk of becoming desensitized to fear and feeling that modern horror pales in comparison to the unrivaled classics of the past. This perspective often leads many to avoid new releases due to purist preconceptions, which they should maybe reconsider.

Fortunately, films like 'Oddity' cater to a more niche yet highly sought-after audience, offering excellent examples of the genre. However, appreciating these gems requires a willingness to explore beyond one's usual preferences. In short, contemporary cinema still holds significant value.

While I tend to be sceptical of supernatural themes, I believe in giving credit where it's due. 'Oddity' deserves such recognition.

This film keeps us on the edge of our seats, blending supernatural elements with a strong psychological component. It skillfully merges horror and crime genres, delivering expertly crafted and unpredictable jump scares that make us leap out of our chairs at just the right moments.

Damian Mc Carthy, the director, masterfully crafts a terrifying atmosphere while developing intriguing and enigmatic characters, despite being filmed almost entirely in a single setting, much like his previous work 'Caveat,' transforming this limited space into a multifaceted environment.

Mc Carthy frames the house as a crime scene, capturing its grim reality. The numerous objective angles make the audience feel like they are witnessing something forbidden. Colm Hogan's photography employs an innovative visual language, masterfully manipulating shadows and light to create a disturbing and unsettling atmosphere.

But...What is "Oddity" about? To truly appreciate this film, it's best to go in knowing as little as possible. The story unfolds in a country house where Dani was murdered under bizarre circumstances. A year later, her twin sister, Darcy, a blind and an antique shop owner, visits the same house, now occupied by the victim's husband and his new partner. Beyond this, the film reveals its secrets gradually, engaging us as we navigate our fears and perceptions while we play detective with family legends and hidden truths.

"Oddity," is a captivating atmospheric film that plunges viewers into the depths of Celtic folklore and superstition. Its compelling storyline and sharp black humour create a refreshingly unique cinematic experience, making it one of the standout films of 2024.
